Hyvä POS: a native iPad POS system built directly into Magento

For Magento merchants with a physical store presence, the in-store experience has long been a compromise. The webshop ran on Magento, the cash register on something else—a separate POS system linked via middleware, with two databases, sync delays, reconciliation work, and the constant risk of catalog, inventory, or customer data drifting apart. Hyvä is set to bridge that gap.

Hyvä recently introduced Hyvä POS, a native iOS app that transforms an iPad (or iPhone) into a Magento POS terminal. The app connects directly to your Magento instance via the REST API—no middleware, no external databases, and no synchronization layer. The product was publicly demonstrated in March 2026 at Webwinkel Vakdagen 2026 and again in April at Hyvä Developers Paradise 2026. A release date has not yet been announced, but the feature set, pricing tiers, and integrations are now known. This is what Magento merchants need to know now.

What Hyvä POS is exactly

Hyvä POS is a point-of-sale system built specifically for Magento Open Source and Adobe Commerce. It is a native iOS app, not a browser interface, allowing the app to work offline, integrate properly with retail hardware (barcode scanners, receipt printers, payment terminals), and feel as fast in the physical store as a modern web frontend feels online.

The architectural choice worth understanding is what the app does NOT do: it does not introduce a separate data layer. Magento remains the single source of truth for catalog, customers, inventory, and orders. Hyvä POS is the interface at the checkout, synchronizing in real-time with the same instance that powers your webshop. No middleware to maintain, no external database to reconcile.

Key features at a glance

Hyvä POS will be available in two variants: a Free version for single-register setups with core functionality, and a PRO version with advanced features for multiple terminals, staff management, and customer displays. The PRO version is positioned as part of the broader Hyvä commercial bundle.

Available in both Free and PRO

  • Full access to the Magento catalog, category navigation, search, and barcode scanning for simple, configurable, bundle, and grouped products
  • Flexible payment options, cash with denomination counting, card payments via Mollie terminals, store credit, and split payments in a single checkout flow
  • Receipt printing via Bluetooth thermal printers, Brother MFi printers, or AirPrint, including custom branding
  • Order management, invoices, shipments, credit memos, and full or partial refunds
  • Customer management with customer search, creation, and order history
  • Multi-Source Inventory (MSI) stock management per source
  • Coupon codes, automatic sales rules, and discounts at both line-item and cart levels
  • Opening and closing the register with cash reconciliation
  • VAT reverse charge mode for B2B and tax-free sales
  • Multi-store support with configuration per instance
  • Custom products for items not present in the catalog
  • Support for customer group pricing
  • Offline order queue, allowing sales to continue without an internet connection
  • Daily and monthly sales reports with payment breakdown and CSV export

PRO additions

  • Pause and recall carts, locally or across multiple terminals
  • Staff accounts and permissions, PIN login for cashiers managed from Magento, role-based permissions, automatic screen lock, and full session tracking
  • Customer display broadcasting: a second iPad or iPhone becomes a customer-facing screen showing the current cart, totals, and payment status, with email capture for digital receipts and light/dark mode

Why this matters for Magento merchants

On paper, every POS product claims tight integration. In practice, most omnichannel setups are built on top of a separate POS database that synchronizes with Magento—and it is in that gap that reconciliation issues, inventory discrepancies, and customer data mismatches arise. Hyvä POS closes that gap completely. Some concrete consequences:

  • One inventory, real-time. MSI inventory is read from and written to the same Magento instance, meaning a sale at the register immediately reduces webshop availability and vice versa.
  • One customer profile. An in-store purchase appears in the same customer profile as online orders. Loyalty, returns, and customer service all work against a single record.
  • One price and promotion engine. Coupon codes, customer group pricing, and sales rules configured in Magento also apply at the register by default.
  • Native hardware support. Because it is a true iOS app and not a web wrapper, it integrates seamlessly with retail printers, scanners, and payment terminals, and continues to work offline if the connection is lost.
  • Strong fit for the Benelux region. The Mollie payment terminal integration and VAT reverse charge mode for B2B sales make this a logical choice specifically for merchants in the Netherlands and Belgium.

Where it fits in the Hyvä ecosystem

Hyvä POS is the latest addition to a commercial suite that has expanded significantly over the past year. The Hyvä Theme became free and open source in November 2025. Hyvä Commerce reached general availability in July 2025, bundling Theme, UI, Checkout, and the new Hyvä CMS, Admin Theme, and Image Editor. Hyvä Enterprise extends compatibility to Adobe Commerce functionality such as the B2B Suite and Adobe Sensei. Hyvä POS now adds the physical retail layer.

Taken together, this is no longer just a frontend project. Hyvä is positioning itself as a complete commerce stack on top of Magento—frontend, checkout, content, admin, and now in-store—all built natively against the platform instead of being coupled to it via middleware.

What is coming, and how to prepare

Hyvä has not yet announced a public release date for POS. The product is in the late development stage, has been demonstrated live on actual hardware, and a newsletter sign-up is open for release announcements. For merchants thinking strategically about omnichannel, now is the time to evaluate your readiness rather than waiting for the launch.

A few practical matters to consider now:

  1. Audit your current in-store setup. Which POS is currently running, what data is not shared with Magento, and what would change if both ran against a single Magento instance?
  2. Assess your hardware. Hyvä POS targets iPads and iPhones, with support for Bluetooth thermal printers, Brother MFi printers, AirPrint, Mollie payment terminals, and common barcode scanners. If your current hardware is not compatible, plan for replacement in your budget.
  3. Map out your inventory model. Multi-Source Inventory (MSI) in Magento becomes more critical once your in-store stock also flows through it. If MSI is not yet properly configured, that work should be on the roadmap now.
  4. Consider your position regarding Hyvä Commerce. Since the PRO POS features are positioned within the broader Hyvä bundle, the POS decision will likely coincide with a broader Hyvä Commerce evaluation.

Which merchants should follow this most closely?

Hyvä POS is most directly relevant for merchants with a physical retail presence alongside their Magento webshop, branded showrooms, flagship stores, regional branches, B2B counters, or any setup where staff serve customers in person from the same catalog that feeds the webshop. The single-database advantage also carries disproportionate weight for B2B distributors working with VAT reverse charges and customer-specific pricing, and for international retailers with multiple stores on a single Magento backend.

If you do not yet sell in-store but are considering it, Hyvä POS fundamentally changes the cost calculation. Setting up a new physical sales channel no longer means purchasing and integrating a separate POS platform; it means installing an app.

Conclusion

Hyvä POS is one of the most strategically interesting product launches Hyvä has undertaken to date. It continues the same architectural philosophy that made the Theme successful—native to Magento, no middleware, no extra database—into the in-store experience. For Magento merchants who already have physical retail today, or are considering it for tomorrow, this is worth a serious look.
