Hyvä Commerce, one year on: how far it has actually come

Most articles about Hyvä Commerce start by explaining what it is.

That is useful – but it misses the more interesting story.

Hyvä Commerce was announced with an ambitious promise: make Magento a more complete, merchant-friendly platform without sacrificing the performance, flexibility and ownership that make it valuable in the first place. At launch, it was not presented as a finished answer to every merchant challenge. It was the beginning of a product suite with a clear direction.

Less than two years later, the question is no longer simply, “What is Hyvä Commerce?”

It is: how much of that promise has already become usable reality?

The answer is: quite a lot.

A roadmap is only valuable when it is respected

When Hyvä announced its Commerce plans in October 2024, the priorities were already clear: improve content management, modernise the Magento admin experience, simplify image handling, and give merchants more control over their storefronts. Just as importantly, the direction was shaped through conversations with merchant teams and Hyvä’s agency partners-not in isolation.

That distinction matters.

A public roadmap can easily become a list of hopeful ideas. Hyvä has instead treated it as a working commitment: publish the direction, gather feedback from the people building and operating stores, then steadily turn the highest-value problems into product releases.

That feedback loop is visible in the features that have followed. They are not random additions. They address the everyday friction that Magento merchants and agencies know well:

  • Content updates that require development time.
  • Campaigns that are difficult to preview, schedule or roll back safely.
  • Admin dashboards that do not reflect a person’s actual role.
  • Product-category ordering that feels unnecessarily manual.
  • Navigation changes that become development tasks.
  • Images that affect storefront performance but are hard to manage consistently.

Hyvä Commerce is becoming less about adding “more features” and more about removing those recurring dependencies.

Where Hyvä Commerce started

The initial Hyvä Commerce proposition focused on a small but meaningful foundation:

  • Hyvä CMS
  • A refreshed Admin Theme
  • An Admin Dashboard with widgets and user-level customisation
  • An integrated Image Editor
  • Media Optimisation

That may not sound like an enormous suite on paper. But it addressed a significant gap in the Magento Open Source experience: the difference between having a powerful commerce engine and having a platform that marketing, merchandising, and operations teams can comfortably use day-to-day.

The July 2025 general-availability release brought Hyvä CMS, the Admin Theme and Image Editor into the stable suite. Hyvä CMS introduced a modern editing workflow with live preview, drag-and-drop editing and version history. At the same time, the Image Editor brought everyday cropping, resizing and optimisation into the Magento admin. Hyvä’s Hyvä’s productupdate 2025

Since then, the story has been one of depth.

The most important progress so far

1. Hyvä CMS: from a better editor to a content operations platform

If there is one feature family that best demonstrates Hyvä Commerce’s direction, it is Hyvä CMS.

The early value was clear: a content team could create and preview pages without relying on a developer for every small change. But the CMS has evolved beyond basic page creation.

Today, the feature set includes workflows that make content safer and more scalable:

  • Live preview before publication
  • Drafts and version history
  • Rollback capability
  • Scheduling
  • Multistore support
  • Reusable templates and snippets
  • Page Builder migration support
  • Product and category attribute support
  • Manual, CSV-based and AI-assisted translations

This is especially meaningful for merchants operating across multiple countries or storefronts. Rather than duplicating work across store views or exporting content to external translation processes, teams can manage translations within the CMS. Hyvä’s current integration supports AI-assisted translation through providers including OpenAI, Gemini and DeepL. Hyvä Product Recap Q1 2026

The bigger point is not “Hyvä has AI.” Plenty of platforms can make that claim.

The more useful point is that AI is being introduced into an existing editorial workflow: one that already supports previewing, approving, scheduling and rolling back content. For merchants, that is where AI becomes practical rather than just impressive in a demo.

2. Menu Builder: navigation becomes a merchandising and content tool

Menu Builder is one of the clearest examples of Hyvä addressing a common pain point for agencies and merchants.

Navigation is often treated as a technical area of a storefront. In reality, it is a major part of how customers discover products, campaigns and content. Merchants need to change it frequently, especially around launches, seasonal campaigns and promotions.

With Menu Builder, merchants can visually build menus using the Hyvä CMS experience. They can combine categories, products, pages, links, banners and images; create separate desktop and mobile menus; and use those menus in headers, footers or CMS content areas.

That means the main navigation can become a properly managed part of the storefront experience rather than a change that must always be queued for development.

It also opens the door to richer mega menus that remain performance-conscious, including optimised imagery through Media Optimisation. Hyvä’s roadmap: Menu Builder

3. Admin Dashboard: from generic overview to role-relevant insight

A dashboard is easy to underestimate because every platform has one.

But a dashboard is only useful if it shows the right information to the right person. A merchandiser, marketing manager, store manager and developer do not need the same starting screen.

Hyvä’s Admin Dashboard began with the essentials: configurable widgets, drag-and-drop placement and useful commercial and storefront data. It has since matured into a more flexible framework, supporting data such as sales activity, recent orders, search terms, conversion funnel activity and Core Web Vitals data.

The important development is not simply “more widgets.” It is the shift toward tailored dashboard views, shared views and role-relevant reporting. For multi-store merchants, the ability to surface information from multiple storefronts in one place is particularly valuable. Hyvä’s roadmap: Admin Dashboard

4. Media Optimisation and Image Editor: performance becomes part of everyday work

Images are one of the most common hidden causes of slow storefronts.

A marketing team can upload a large campaign image in seconds. The consequences are slower page loads, weaker Core Web Vitals, and a poorer mobile experience that can last much longer.

Hyvä Commerce tackles this from two directions. The integrated Image Editor makes routine image edits possible directly in the admin. Media Optimisation then helps ensure assets are resized and served in modern formats such as WebP and AVIF before they become a storefront problem.

This is an excellent example of Hyvä’s broader approach: performance is not treated as a specialist task reserved for developers. It is built into the way merchant teams work. Hyvä Commerce 1.2-update

5. Category Merchandising: a high-impact next step for commercial teams

Category Merchandising is currently available in beta, but it deserves prominent coverage because it solves a direct revenue-related problem.

Instead of managing product positions within categories via sequence numbers and abstract admin fields, merchants can search for products, view visual previews, and rearrange them using drag-and-drop. Existing category position data is preserved, which lowers the barrier to entry for adoption.

For a webshop that regularly promotes seasonal items, high-margin products, new collections, or inventory-sensitive items, this makes merchandising faster and significantly less prone to error.

Hyvä is also working on rule-based merchandising and product pinning, allowing teams to automate the filling and ordering of categories based on product attributes, availability, and scheduling. This represents a meaningful evolution from manual category management toward commercial automation. Hyvä’s roadmap: Category Merchandising

Features to prioritize in this narrative

Not every release deserves the same amount of attention. For merchants, we would prioritize the feature narrative in the following order:

  • Hyvä CMS and translations – the strongest evidence that merchants can create, manage, and localize content more independently.
  • Menu Builder – direct value for navigation, campaigns, product discovery, and agency handover.
  • Admin Dashboard – increasingly relevant for role-based operations and multi-store visibility.
  • Media Optimisation and Image Editor – a practical connection between content workflows, performance, and conversion.
  • Support for product and category attributes in Hyvä CMS – brings content and catalog management closer together.
  • Category Merchandising – a highly relevant beta feature for merchants who actively manage their assortment and category performance.
  • Linked Products – a useful beta capability to display product variations with better discoverability and SEO control.

What the roadmap says about what is coming

The roadmap also demonstrates the broader ambition.

Hyvä Commerce is moving beyond content and admin improvements toward a more connected merchant toolkit: product links, rule-based merchandising, email templates, customer retention tools, return management, loyalty, gift cards, and more.

Hyvä POS is particularly interesting for merchants with physical locations. The roadmap describes a native iOS POS app that connects directly to the Magento catalog, inventory, customers, and orders, including offline use. However, it is important to be precise: Hyvä currently states that final features, tiers, and pricing are yet to be confirmed. It should therefore be positioned as a promising direction for omnichannel merchants, rather than a finalized release available today. Hyvä’s roadmap: Hyvä POS

The same applies to broader AI-driven content generation. Hyvä’s roadmap describes future tooling for creating text, HTML, images, and even page sections from within Hyvä CMS. While appealing, this feature is still in the build phase of the roadmap. The AI narrative delivered today is about translation, not fully autonomous content generation.

The real story is momentum with direction

Hyvä Commerce has grown rapidly, but speed alone is not the point.

The significance lies in the pattern behind the releases. Hyvä started with the core gaps in the merchant experience, delivered an initial foundation, and has continued to expand in the areas where merchants and agencies feel operational pain most directly.

That makes Hyvä Commerce worth following. Not because it claims to replace every part of a commerce stack overnight, but because it makes Magento more usable step-by-step for the people who run a store with it every day.

The roadmap is not a promise of everything at once.

It is proof of a product team that listens, prioritizes, and delivers.
