Hyvä Theme has been free since November 2025: what does this mean for Magento merchants?

On November 10, 2025, Hyvä discontinued its own revenue model. The Hyvä Theme, which has been the leading modern frontend solution for Magento 2 for years, became completely free and open source as of version 1.4.0, released under the same OSL 3.0 and AFL 3.0 licenses as Magento Open Source itself. The €1,000 license fee per Magento installation, which served as an entry barrier for years, is now a thing of the past.

For Magento merchants, this is a significant strategic moment. However, the story is more nuanced than “Hyvä is now free, so everyone should switch.” In this article, we outline exactly what has changed, what still requires payment, and — frankly — what a Hyvä migration actually costs in 2026. Plus: which merchants should consider this the right time to switch and for whom it might be better to wait a little longer.

What exactly changed on November 10, 2025?

Hyvä introduced version 1.4.0 with a major license change: the core of the Hyvä Theme has been freely available since that date via GitHub and through a free Packagist key from the Hyvä Portal.

What this means in practice:

  • One-time license costs of €1,000 have been scrapped for the core theme
  • Dual licensing under OSL 3.0 and AFL 3.0, the same licenses as Magento Open Source. Full rights for commercial use, modification, and distribution
  • No obligation to have a commercial relationship with Hyvä to use the theme
  • Full access to the codebase, including all standard page templates (category, product, cart, account) and Alpine.js components

The most recent version, Hyvä Theme 1.4.4 from March 2026, runs on Tailwind CSS v4 and the new Oxide engine in Rust. This ensures faster build times and CSS-first configuration via @theme directives. The ecosystem is also growing steadily: more than 6,400 live webshops are now running on Hyvä.

The background of this step is strategic. With the launch of Hyvä Commerce (the complete suite) in July 2025 and the strategic partnership with Mollie, Hyvä’s revenue model is shifting toward premium products and subscriptions. The theme itself has become the entry-level product — and Hyvä has decided to make that entry-level product as accessible as possible.

What is free and what still requires payment?

It is important to be precise here, as the marketing message “Hyvä is free” only covers part of the reality. The complete Hyvä ecosystem consists of four products:

Free

  • Hyvä Theme (core) — the full frontend framework with all standard page templates, Tailwind CSS integration, and Alpine.js components

Still paid

  • Hyvä UI — €250 per webshop. An extensive library of ready-to-use components (mobile menus, pagination, breadcrumbs, cart drawers, banners) that save you significant time during implementation
  • Hyvä Checkout — subscription model. The optimized checkout solution that integrates seamlessly with Hyvä Theme
  • Hyvä Commerce — the complete suite (Theme + UI + Checkout + new admin and CMS functionality). Subscription model with annual renewal or perpetual license, custom pricing based on webshop size
  • Hyvä Enterprise — specifically for merchants on Adobe Commerce. Offers compatibility for the B2B Suite, Adobe Sensei, Live Search, Product Recommendations, Loyalty, and Gift Cards

For most merchants, this means the theme itself is free, but as soon as you want to get serious about checkout optimization, content management, or B2B functionality, you will still end up with paid Hyvä products. And that makes sense — you receive substantial functionality in return.

The reality: the license was never the real cost factor

And here lies the heart of the matter. For most Magento merchants, that €1,000 license was never the real obstacle. In a total Hyvä migration project, the license historically represented less than 5% of the investment. Its removal is symbolically and psychologically important, but it only marginally changes the business case.

The real investment in a Hyvä migration lies in:

  • Frontend rebuild in Tailwind CSS and Alpine.js, including responsive design and branding implementation
  • Extension compatibility audit — not all extensions work out-of-the-box with Hyvä. Some require compatibility modules (€50-€300 per extension), others need to be replaced or redeveloped
  • Custom modules and bespoke features that need to be rebuilt or adapted
  • Setting up the design system and component library
  • Data migration and testing for all critical flows: catalog, checkout, payment methods, integrations
  • SEO preservation via redirect mapping and metadata migration
  • Training your internal team on the new stack

What does a Hyvä migration really cost in 2026?

For a mid-market Magento webshop (€1M to €50M annual turnover), the typical investment for a complete Hyvä migration ranges between €30,000 and €70,000. Where you land within that range depends on several factors:

FactorImpact on costs
Number of extensions and custom modulesDirect: more modules = more compatibility work
Complexity of the designCustom design vs. theme adaptation
Type of webshop (B2C vs. B2B)B2B requires extra work on account hierarchies, pricing, quick reordering
Number of storeviews and languagesMultiple stores = more testing and configuration time
Integrations with ERP, PIM, and marketplacesAPI flows must be tested and sometimes rebuilt
Whether or not to redesign simultaneouslyA rebuild with a new design costs more than a 1-to-1 migration

For enterprise projects and heavily customized webshops, these costs will be higher. For smaller shops, they may fall below this range. That is why we start every collaboration with a free Hyvä readiness scan, so you have an informed estimate upfront instead of a vague figure.

In addition to the migration costs themselves, there are ongoing costs to consider:

  • Hosting on a Hyvä-optimized platform such as Hypernode or maxcluster
  • Maintenance and support — Magento continues to require maintenance (security patches, updates, monitoring)
  • Any Hyvä Checkout or Commerce subscriptions if you want to utilize the entire suite

What does this mean for different types of merchants?

For smaller webshops (under €1M turnover), this is the biggest change. For this group, Hyvä was historically difficult to justify, not so much because of the license but because of the total project costs in relation to turnover. Now that the license has been removed and Hyvä is fully open source, the ecosystem becomes more accessible for freelancers and smaller agencies to build with. Total project costs remain significant, but the entry barrier is measurably lower.

For mid-market merchants (€1M to €50M), not much changes in substance. The business case for Hyvä was already strong here: 4 to 5 times lighter pages, Lighthouse scores above 90, 30 to 50% faster development compared to standard Magento themes. The removal of the license is a nice bonus, but the real gain lies in conversion, SEO ranking, and operational efficiency. For this group, the question is no longer “if,” but “when.”

For larger merchants on Adobe Commerce, the combination of the free Hyvä Theme + Hyvä Enterprise opens up new possibilities. You get Hyvä’s performance across all storefront functionality, including the complete B2B Suite, Live Search, Product Recommendations, and Loyalty features. For B2B distributors and industrial merchants, this is a powerful combination.

What if you already paid for Hyvä?

Many merchants and agencies were in a position where they had already purchased a Hyvä Theme or Checkout license before November 2025. Hyvä offers a trade-in path for this group: you can easily exchange your existing paid license for a Hyvä Commerce subscription, which gives you access to Hyvä UI, Hyvä Checkout, and new functionality such as Hyvä CMS, Admin Theme, and Image Editor.

Those who do not wish to convert their paid Hyvä license can simply continue using it as before. There is no forced migration, and support remains available.

When is the right time to switch?

Based on the migrations we manage, we see several clear triggers where switching now is strategic:

  1. You are facing a Magento upgrade anyway. With Magento 2.4.9 (released in May 2026) and the end-of-life of 2.4.6 on August 11, 2026, you must upgrade your version. Combine this with the Hyvä migration to avoid two separate projects.
  2. Your conversion rate is lagging behind your traffic. Slow loading times are one of the biggest causes of drop-offs. Hyvä’s performance gains (Core Web Vitals in the green, mobile Lighthouse 90+) translate directly into higher conversion.
  3. You are planning a redesign anyway. Performing a redesign on Luma and then migrating to Hyvä is double work. Do it in a single project.
  4. You have B2B ambitions. Large catalogs, customer-specific pricing, quick reordering, and account hierarchies benefit disproportionately from Hyvä’s speed and UX.
  5. You are struggling with an overly complex headless setup. For merchants who have outgrown the overhead of a PWA or headless architecture, Hyvä offers a pragmatic middle ground with comparable performance without the double codebase.

Waiting is sensible if you have just completed a major redesign, are in the middle of a platform change, or have limited internal resources for a 4 to 8-week project.

How do you know if your webshop is ready?

A reliable Hyvä migration always begins with a structured readiness scan. In this scan, we map out four key areas:

  • Performance baseline: current Lighthouse scores, Core Web Vitals, and page weight as a baseline measurement
  • Extension inventory: which extensions you are running, which have Hyvä compatibility, and which require work
  • Customization mapping: which custom modules and modifications need to be migrated
  • Cost and timeline estimate: a concrete range for budget and lead time

With that scan on the table, you can make an informed go/no-go decision without surprises halfway through the project.

Conclusion

Making the Hyvä Theme free is a significant step for the Magento ecosystem, but the real question for merchants is no longer “does this theme cost too much?” The license was never the issue. The question is now strategic: does Hyvä fit where my webshop wants to go in the next three years?

For most mid-market Magento merchants, the answer is a clear yes. The combination of faster development, drastically better performance, a growing ecosystem, and — since November 2025 — no entry license makes 2026 the moment to start planning that switch concretely.
